Phra Ngao Skywalk The Three-Country View, a new landmark in Chiang Saen, is a must-visit destination. This small town is packed with history, culture, and natural beauty. The Skywalk offers not only stunning views of the Mekong River and neighboring countries but also a serene and spiritual experience.
Located on the northern slope of Phra Borommathat Phuttha Nimit Chedi at Wat Phra That Phra Ngao, the Skywalk stands at an elevation of 486 meters above sea level. Its glass walkway stretches 70 meters, providing visitors with a thrilling clear view of the ground below. In addition to the height, the Skywalk’s structure is elevated 25 meters above the hill’s surface.
From the Skywalk, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of three countries: Thailand along the Mekong River, Laos with its verdant mountains, and Myanmar visible in the distance. The scenic beauty varies by season. During winter, a sea of mist hugs the Mekong River, while in summer and the rainy season, the river's slow flow reveals the riverside life of local communities.
Wat Phra That Phra Ngao is an ancient temple that has stood in Chiang Saen for centuries. Its sacred aura attracts pilgrims from far and wide, especially to worship Luang Por Phra Ngao, a sandstone Buddha statue in the Maravijaya posture. Visitors believe that prayers made here bring success and blessings.
Another highlight is the sandstone chedi, located near the ordination hall, which stands as a unique feature of the temple. The Phra Borommathat Phuttha Nimit Chedi on the hilltop serves as a spiritual center, hosting significant annual religious ceremonies.
Experiences You Shouldn’t Miss Walking on the Skywalk: Challenge yourself by stepping onto the clear glass walkway and enjoy capturing breathtaking photos. Paying Respects and Seeking Blessings: Enhance your spiritual journey by praying to Luang Por Phra Ngao and the sandstone chedi. Watching the Sunset: The Skywalk is one of the best spots to witness a sunset, especially when the golden light reflects on the Mekong River.
Tips for Visitors Early mornings are perfect for viewing the sea of mist, while evenings are ideal for sunsets.
Wear appropriate footwear for walking on the glass floor. Follow staff instructions strictly to ensure safety.
How to Get There Travelers can reach the Skywalk by private car or local transport. The route up the hill is straightforward and convenient. From Chiang Rai city, take Highway 1 (Phaholyothin Road) towards Mae Chan District, then turn right onto Highway 1016 (Chiang Saen-Mae Chan Road). Drive for approximately 30 kilometers to reach Wat Phra That Phra Ngao. The Skywalk is located on the northern slope of the temple. The total distance is about 60 kilometers (roughly a one-hour drive), and parking is available at the temple.
Phra Ngao Skywalk is not only a tourist attraction featuring breathtaking natural scenery and views but also a spiritual and cultural landmark in Chiang Saen. It is a perfect destination for those seeking tranquility, faith, and a unique travel experience.
