Attractions in Thailand

The Chao Po Kao Lom Mouk Shrine is a revered sacred site in Prachuap Khiri Khan, honored by locals for generations. Located at the base of Kao Lom Mouk near Ao Manao within Wing 5, this shrine not only stands as a place of faith but also represents historical importance, particularly during World War II. The legend and sacred powers attributed to Chao Po Kao Lom Mouk have drawn worshippers and visitors from all around.

According to inscriptions at the shrine, Chao Po Kao Lom Mouk was originally a Chinese man who arrived in Siam during the Ayutthaya period by junk boat, seeking a new life. After settling, he devoted himself to the community and became widely respected for his benevolence and contributions. When he passed at the age of 97, his spirit was said to remain as a guardian of Kao Lom Mouk, bestowing blessings and protection on those who came to seek his guidance.

The Shrine’s Sacred Powers During World War II One of the most significant tales of Chao Po Kao Lom Mouk's power occurred during World War II. As Japanese forces began bombing the area, locals took refuge at the shrine, praying for Chao Po's protection. Miraculously, accounts say that when bombs were dropped near the shrine, they veered off course into the sea, leaving the villagers unharmed. This remarkable event even moved some Japanese soldiers who witnessed it to visit the shrine and ask for forgiveness.

Today, Chao Po Kao Lom Mouk Shrine remains a sanctuary of peace, frequently visited by locals and visitors seeking blessings. Inside the shrine, a statue of Chao Po stands, depicted as a kind-hearted Chinese man. Numerous hats are placed as offerings from visitors, symbolizing respect for Chao Po’s legacy and benevolent spirit. The shrine provides a serene and spiritual setting for those who visit to connect with its rich history and legends.

The name "Kao Lom Mouk" is inspired by the area’s unique geography. A small peak rises above the sea, shaped somewhat like a traditional Chinese hat, and is surrounded by larger mountains. This distinctive formation led to the name "Kao Lom Mouk," which translates as "Mountain Encircling the Hat."

To reach the shrine, begin at Prachuap Khiri Khan's City Hall and drive along the beach road heading south toward Wing 5. After around 500 meters, you’ll see the entrance to the shrine on the left. Drive approximately 1 kilometer further to arrive at the Chao Po Kao Lom Mouk Shrine, located in this historic area.

The Chao Po Kao Lom Mouk Shrine is not only a site of devotion but also a place deeply embedded in the heart of Prachuap Khiri Khan’s history. The shrine offers a sense of peace and connection to local tradition, welcoming all who come to experience its spiritual significance and to pay homage to a figure celebrated for his enduring protection and goodwill.
