Wat Thong Phleng Khlong Ton Sai, Klong San, Bangkok. Wat Thong Phleng, a private temple under the Maha Nikaya sect, is located in Khlong Ton Sai Subdistrict, Khlong San District, Bangkok. It has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1791 (B.E. 2334). The temple was granted Wisungkhamasima (a land deed for constructing an ordination hall) on November 4, 1966 (B.E. 2509). This temple stands as a testament to the history, art, and deep-rooted faith of the local community.
Historical Background Originally called “Wat Klang Thung” (Temple in the Middle of the Field) due to its location amidst rice fields and fruit orchards, the temple later became known as “Wat Thong Phleng” (Golden Melody Temple). The name honors a lay devotee named Mr. Thong, who was a folk song singer. Mr. Thong invited monks to reside at the temple and used the income from his singing career to renovate and develop it. His contributions earned him respect from the community, and the temple was subsequently named after him.
The ordination hall at Wat Thong Phleng reflects traditional Thai architecture in the Ayutthaya style. Inside, the principal Buddha image, named “Luang Pho Sitthichai,” is enshrined. This sacred Buddha image in the Mara Vichaya (Subduing Mara) posture holds significant historical and religious importance.
According to local legends, Luang Pho Sitthichai was either discovered floating in the river or unearthed near Wat Kok in the Bang Khun Thian District before being transported to Wat Thong Phleng by boat.
The interior walls of the ordination hall feature exquisite murals that narrate the story of the Buddha opening the world. These murals also depict important stupas from various parts of Thailand and illustrate local traditions and customs from all regions of the country, showcasing the uniqueness and diversity of Thai culture.
Wat Thong Phleng is not only a spiritual center for the residents of Khlong San but also a repository of historical, artistic, and cultural heritage passed down through generations. The temple reflects the vital role of community members, such as Mr. Thong, in developing it into a place of worship and cultural expression.
Today, Wat Thong Phleng continues to serve as a significant site where devotees gather for religious practices, cultural celebrations, and moments of peace, surrounded by an atmosphere rich in artistry and devotion.
Conveniently located near Bangkok’s city center, Wat Thong Phleng is accessible by public transportation or ferry from the Phra Nakhon side of the river to Khlong San. This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking to experience Thailand’s rich cultural heritage and serene beauty.
