Wat Khlong Toei Nai is a public temple under the Maha Nikaya sect of Theravada Buddhism. Located in Khlong Toei Subdistrict, Khlong Toei District, Bangkok, it spans approximately 12 rai (around 4.74 acres). This temple serves as an important religious and cultural hub in the Khlong Toei area, boasting a long history and a strong focus on preserving Thai arts and culture.

Historical Background Wat Khlong Toei Nai was established in 1807 (B.E. 2350) by local residents. Historically, the temple was bordered to the east by Khlong Toei, a canal that gave the area its name. The canal was once lined with pandan plants on both sides, attracting villagers who paddled their boats to gather pandan leaves for use in Thai desserts. Today, the canal has been almost entirely filled in and transformed into residential areas.

In the past, the temple grounds also housed the Lions Club Dusit Bangkok and the Public Health Office of the Bangkok Municipality, highlighting the temple's importance within the community. Currently, only Wat Khlong Toei School remains adjacent to the temple.

Religious and Cultural Significance The temple's ordination hall enshrines Phra Phuttha Si Sanphet, a Buddha statue in the Mara Vichaya (Overcoming Mara) posture, also known as "Calling the Earth to Witness." Measuring seven sok (approximately 3.5 meters) across the lap, the statue is crafted from fine stone and gilded with gold leaf, a masterpiece of Ayutthaya-era Buddhist art. The temple also preserves various historical artifacts, including ceremonial fans from different eras and antique wall clocks.

Wat Khlong Toei Nai is renowned for offering cremation services for pets, such as dogs and cats, reflecting compassion for both animals and their owners. Additionally, the temple plays a vital role in preserving traditional Thai topiary and miniature rock gardens, art forms that hold significant cultural value.

The abbots who have guided and developed Wat Khlong Toei Nai over the years include: Phra Ajahn Thong, Phra Ajahn Ek, Phra Ajahn Bang, Phra Khru Thiraphinan (Mian Klinruen), Phra Khru Thiraphinan Chup Rungreung (Luang Pu Chup), Phra Ratchasittasuntorn (Somphong Kittisaro).

Getting There Wat Khlong Toei Nai is conveniently located near Rama IV Road and can be accessed by private car or public transportation. Bus routes passing the area include lines 45 and 46. Alternatively, visitors can take the MRT subway to Khlong Toei Station and continue their journey via local taxis or motorbike services.

Wat Khlong Toei Nai is not only a significant place for performing religious ceremonies but also a valuable center of learning for history and culture, reflecting the lives and transformations of the Khlong Toei community. This temple is truly a place worth visiting and preserving for future generations.
