Khun Khan National Park is a vast natural area on the western side of Chiang Mai Province, covering approximately 397 square kilometers across Samoeng and Mae Chaem districts. The landscape is dominated by complex mountain ranges, with elevations ranging from about 500 to 1,708 meters above sea level. Its highest peak is “Doi Pung Kia.” Most of the park is covered by dry dipterocarp forest, mixed deciduous forest, pine forest, and montane evergreen forest, functioning as both a watershed source and an ecological buffer for the western Ping River basin.

Viewed through an ecological lens, Khun Khan is not simply “a national park to drop by” but an active forest system that is still doing real work. Lower-elevation dry dipterocarp and mixed deciduous forests help the landscape endure the dry season and reduce soil erosion, while higher-elevation pine and evergreen forests retain water, build humidity, and sustain smaller feeder streams that flow down to agricultural areas and communities below. This vertical diversity of forest types is the heart of Khun Khan as a “living watershed forest.”

Underground mineral water emerges at around 38°C, creating a relaxing atmosphere that works well as a rest stop along the route or as a half-day destination. Seasonally, Khun Khan changes its character quite clearly. From late cool season into early summer, deciduous forests reveal the mountain structure more distinctly; yellows, oranges, and browns from dry dipterocarp trees make the terrain feel open and the ridge lines easier to read. In terms of travel style, Khun Khan is best for people who value the journey as much as the destination. Driving slowly along the Mae Rim–Samoeng route, stopping at the hot spring, walking around the forest near the headquarters, and pausing to look at mountains from different angles are the core activities here, rather than rushing to collect check-in points.

Getting There From Chiang Mai city, there are 2 main routes. Route 1 uses Highway 107 (Chiang Mai–Mae Rim), then turns onto Highway 1096 toward Samoeng. This is the most popular route, with continuous curves and close-up mountain views, ideal for a day trip. Route 2 uses Highway 108 (Chiang Mai–Hang Dong), then Highway 1269 into Samoeng, and continues on the Samoeng–Ban Wat Chan road. This route is known for its calm atmosphere and scenery, especially in late cool season when deciduous forests change color along the ridges.

For trip planning, Khun Khan works especially well as a meaningful “rest segment” along a driving itinerary rather than as a single destination that ends the day. Allowing at least half a day makes the visit feel more complete than a quick photo stop before moving on.
