Attractions in Thailand
Maekha Canal, located in the heart of Chiang Mai city near Chang Klan Road, has become a popular tourist destination among both Thai and international visitors. The area is particularly charming in the evening, offering a peaceful atmosphere perfect for strolling and photography, with a scenic view along the canal that has been renovated to appear clean and attractive, making it a unique landmark in the city.
History of Maekha Canal Today, Maekha Canal is a small waterway, approximately 750 meters long, which has undergone restoration and improvement by the government and various organizations to become an appealing tourist spot. Originally, Maekha Canal served as part of the outer moat surrounding the city of Chiang Mai, used as a transportation route and drainage channel flowing from Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. However, with the city's expansion and the improper disposal of waste into the canal, its water quality deteriorated. In 2020, government bodies, the private sector, NGOs, and various stakeholders worked together to restore Maekha Canal, aiming to make it a candidate for UNESCO's recognition as a World Heritage site.
Visitors to Maekha Canal will immediately notice the serene and charming atmosphere, with subtle hints of a Japanese-style aesthetic along the canal. The concrete serene blocks lining the water are arranged in a visually appealing manner, complemented by various shops, including beverage stalls, restaurants, and souvenir shops. Each store has its unique décor, creating an inviting ambiance that encourages tourists to explore and visit each shop.
For the best experience, it is recommended to visit Maekha Canal in the late afternoon, around 4:00 PM onwards. During this time, the weather is cooler, and the sunlight in the early evening creates perfect conditions for photography. Additionally, live music performances add to the lively atmosphere, making it even more enjoyable to walk along the canal. The activities typically end around 10:00 PM every day.
A visit to Maekha Canal is not only a relaxing getaway but also an opportunity to witness the collaboration between the local community and various organizations in preserving the cultural heritage and promoting sustainable tourism in Chiang Mai.
