Wat Tri Thotsathep Worawihan, is a third grade royal temple of the Worawihan type. Prince Witsanunart Nipha Thorn (Prince Supradit - the founder of the Supradit Na Ayutthaya royal family clan), who was one of King Rama IV's sons, intended to build this temple near his palace.

However, he passed away in 1862 (B.E. 2405) before starting the construction of the temple, so King Rama IV ordered Prince Mahesuan Siwailat (Prince Nopphawong - the founder of Nopphawong Na Ayutthaya royal family clan), a half-blood son of Chao Chom Marnda Noi (the first concubine of King Rama IV), to continue the construction.

But Prince Mahesuan Siwailat also passed away in 1867 (B.E. 2410) before the construction was completed. So King Rama IV continued and completed the construction and graciously named the temple Wat Tri Thosathep which means A Temple That Was Built By 3 Deities which refers to King Rama IV and his two sons who tried to build this temple together.

Phuk Phattha Sima (the temple's boundary which was fixed by monks) ceremony was held on January 7, 1949 (B.E. 2492).
The important Buddha images enshrined inside the Ordination Hall (Phra Ubosoth) are as follows: The first one is the Principal Buddha Image in meditation posture, made from an alloy and built by Prince Phak Phimonphan.

The others are two standing Buddha images holding alms bowls, wearing Prince Witsanunart Nipha Thorn's clothes and another one wearing Prince Mahesuan Siwailat's clothes. Both images were built by King Rama IV.
