Wat Pa Sawang Bun is a public temple under the Thammayut sect of Thai Buddhism, located in Chao Om Subdistrict, Kaeng Khoi District, Saraburi Province. This temple has garnered significant attention from tourists and devoted Buddhists alike due to its unique architectural features and tranquil atmosphere, making it an ideal place for meditation and religious practice.
The temple was founded on September 26, 1991, by Phra Khru Wisut Sutthawat, using over 400 rai of land, which was generously donated by his father. It officially received the royal land dedication (Visungkhamsima) on March 2, 2010, marking its status as a recognized Buddhist sanctuary.
The highlight of Wat Pa Sawang Bun is undoubtedly the grand "Phra Maha Rattana Loha Chedi Si Sasanabodhisattva Sawang Bun," popularly known as the "Temple of 500 Stupas." The central stupa, with a diameter of 50 meters and nine tiers, is surrounded by 500 smaller stupas, all intricately designed and coated in a dazzling golden hue. This spectacular structure has become a major attraction, impressing all who visit.
Inside the main stupa, the interior walls are adorned with ruby-like glass mosaics that reflect light beautifully, creating a serene yet vibrant ambiance. Additionally, images of important pagodas from across Thailand are displayed inside. Most notably, the stupa houses sacred relics of the Buddha, which were brought from Nepal, India, and Sri Lanka, providing a focal point for reverence and devotion.
Wat Pa Sawang Bun serves not only as a vital religious center for meditation and worship but also as a cultural and architectural showcase of Thai heritage. Visitors to Saraburi should not miss the opportunity to experience this remarkable temple, where beauty and serenity merge harmoniously.
