Chiang Rai Contemporary Art Museum is a new cultural landmark in Chiang Rai, brought to life through the visionary efforts of Thailand’s National Artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat. The museum aspires to establish Chiang Rai as a city of art, fostering connections between people, artists, and the vibrant world of contemporary art.
The project commenced in 2022 on a 17-rai plot of land generously donated by art patron Taweechai Aramrasmikul. The museum’s initial phase centers on a modern architectural structure featuring two prominent towers: the Black Tower and the White Tower, symbolizing two iconic Chiang Rai artists—Thawan Duchanee and Chalermchai Kositpipat. Within the building, visitors will find permanent exhibitions dedicated to these masters, rotating exhibition spaces, a museum shop, and a café.
The museum made its debut as the main venue for the Thailand Biennale, Chiang Rai 2023, an international contemporary art festival. Its mission is to draw art lovers and tourists from around the world to experience the artistic soul of Chiang Rai.
Future developments include plans for a museum complex with a theater, an auditorium, and an artist village. This village will serve as a creative haven where artists can bring their ideas to life. The long-term vision of the Chiang Rai Contemporary Art Museum is to position Chiang Rai as a premier center for art and culture in Thailand, while deepening the relationship between art and the community.
Getting There Chiang Rai Contemporary Art Museum is situated in Mueang District, Chiang Rai Province. It is conveniently accessible from downtown Chiang Rai via Phahonyothin Road (Highway No. 1) toward Wat Rong Khun.
