Wat Chulamani, Ang Thong Province: A Historical and Architectural Treasure. Among the rich cultural and historical heritage of Ang Thong Province, Wat Chulamani stands out as one of the significant temples with great historical and architectural value. This temple is located in Ongrak Subdistrict and is believed to have been built after the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767 AD (B.E. 2310) by a monk who escaped from the Burmese and returned to construct the temple.

 

Wat Chulamani showcases distinct Ayutthaya-style architecture, especially with its pointed arches. The temple also houses a chedi (stupa) that stands 38 meters tall, making it the largest chedi in Ang Thong. This chedi is thought to have been built later when Thailand was influenced by both Western and Chinese architectural styles, reflecting a fusion of cultural influences during that period.

 

Another highlight within the temple grounds is the wooden sermon hall (sala kan parian), built during the reign of King Rama V. This hall features a unique design with tiered roofs and no ceiling, allowing the intricate wooden structure to be visible. This design demonstrates the ingenuity of local craftsmen of the past, who were able to solve structural challenges by constructing a large hall using smaller wooden beams than those typically used. This showcases their creativity in efficiently utilizing materials, making the hall a worthy subject for study and preservation.

 

In addition to the chedi and the sermon hall, Wat Chulamani houses other ancient architectural structures that have been officially registered as historical sites by the Fine Arts Department. Travel From Bangkok: Take the Asian Highway (Highway No. 32) north toward Ang Thong Province. Upon reaching Ang Thong, turn left onto Ang Thong-Wiset Chai Chan Road (Highway No. 3454). Continue driving for approximately 8 kilometers until you reach Ongrak Subdistrict, where you will find signs directing you to Wat Chulamani.

 

By public transport: Visitors can take a van from Bangkok to Ang Thong or a bus on the Bangkok-Chai Nat route. Upon arriving in Ang Thong city, take a local songthaew (shared truck) or motorcycle taxi to Wat Chulamani, which is about 8 kilometers from the city center.
