Klai Kangwon Palace is located in Hua Hin Subdistrict, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. With a history spanning over 83 years, the palace was originally constructed as a royal retreat for King Rama VII and Queen Rambhai Barni. King Rama VII funded the construction with his personal finances. The project was managed by HSH Prince Ittithepsan Kridakorn, a prominent architect at that time.
Unique Features of Klai Kangwon Palace The palace features four main buildings facing the sea, each with harmonious and meaningful names, namely "Phieng Sook," "Pluk Kasem," "Eo Prem," and "Em Pree."
- Phieng Sook Residence: This two-story Spanish-style building with a high tower served as the main residence for King Rama VII and Queen Rambhai Barni. Currently, it is used as a seasonal residence by King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit.
- Small Residence: A smaller residence built for Queen Rambhai Barni’s parents, HRH Prince Swadis and HRH Princess Aphapornpan. This residence was also used by Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother, during her visits.
- Pluk Kasem Residence: Designed in a modern Thai style with an airy atmosphere, it includes multiple bedrooms and bathrooms. Currently, it serves as the seasonal residence for Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
- Eo Prem and Em Pree Residences: These twin single-story bungalows were built as seaside retreats. Their identical structures offer a serene atmosphere for all royal family members to relax by the sea.
Construction and Historical Background Construction began in 1926 and was completed in 1929, taking three years. Named by King Rama VII, “Klai Kangwon” means “far from worries,” symbolizing a peaceful seaside haven. The architectural design is Spanish-inspired but adapted for Thailand’s tropical climate, creating a cozy, informal atmosphere for relaxation.
Each residence’s frontage features elegant decorations, including antique lamps, nautical equipment, stone sculptures, and sundials. The palace grounds are designed with a Western-style garden that emphasizes aesthetic details. Additionally, a shell museum within the grounds showcases various types of seashells for visitors to enjoy.
The palace is a symbol of peace and the bond between the royal family and the Thai people. In 2013, King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit stayed temporarily at Phieng Sook Residence. This occasion was met with a large, enthusiastic welcome from the people, showing their deep reverence and love for the royal family.
