Wat Rong Khe In Rong Khao Subdistrict, Ban Phaeo District, Samut Sakhon Province, stands a temple deeply rooted in the local community’s history—Wat Rong Khao. This public temple under the Mahanikaya Sangha currently has Phra Khru Chantasuwan Sakorn (Thongpleow Chantasuwanno) as its abbot.
The history of Wat Rong Khao is closely intertwined with the development of the local community. During the late Ayutthaya period, settlers from Nakhon Pathom moved into the Ban Phaeo area to engage in agriculture. This area, rich in natural beauty, was also home to a significant crocodile population. When villagers discovered the remains of a crocodile, they built a shelter to store it, leading to the area being named "Crocodile Shelter Village" (Ban Rong Jorakhe). Over time, the name evolved into "Rong Khao."
Driven by their Buddhist faith, the villagers came together to build a temple in this area. Consequently, the village’s name was changed to “Ban Wat Rong Khao.” The temple was officially established in 1904 (BE 2447) and later received its boundary ordination (wisungkhamsima) on January 1, 1970 (BE 2513).
Wat Rong Khao is not only a place of worship but also a hub for cultural preservation and learning. The current abbot, Phra Khru Chantasuwan Sakorn, has played a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing the temple’s importance as a spiritual refuge for the community.
The temple grounds also house Wat Rong Khao School, which provides education from kindergarten to primary levels. Additionally, the temple serves as a venue for religious ceremonies and traditional events, such as candlelight processions on Buddhist holy days.
Wat Rong Khao is more than a religious site; it is a repository of the community’s collective memory and history. The villagers take great pride in their temple, which symbolizes unity and unwavering faith in Buddhism.
Wat Rong Khao is a beacon of faith and culture for the residents of Rong Khao Subdistrict, both past and present. It serves not only as a sacred place but also as a testament to the strength of community bonds. Visitors are encouraged to experience the warm and welcoming atmosphere of this cherished temple.
