Drum Competition Tradition The booming sound of the "phon" drum resonates through the vibrant atmosphere of the annual drum competition in Phatthalung Province, highlighting the deep cultural significance and affection that the local people have for this unique traditional instrument. The rich, resonant tones of the phon not only represent the tradition but also embody the way of life of the people of the South, passed down through generations. This tradition is more than just a competition; it is a symbol of pride in the local culture.

History and Background of the Phon The phon is a traditional musical instrument from the southern region of Thailand, playing a crucial role in everyday life in the past. Historically, the phon was used to signal danger at night, call village meetings, announce mealtimes, and provide rhythm during the annual "Loi Krathong" festival. It evolved into a competitive event during the "Loi Krathong" celebrations, with various temples in the area hosting grand events. The sound of the phon from different temples became so prominent that it led to organized competitions, particularly in Phatthalung Province.

The drum competition in Phatthalung Province began with the use of the phon during the Loi Krathong festival, held on the end of the Buddhist Lent. Temples in the vicinity would host large-scale events, making it difficult to distinguish which temple's phon was producing the sound. This led to the development of competitive drum events, adding excitement and enthusiasm to the celebrations.

Prior to the competition, participants dedicate themselves to crafting the best phon possible. They select high-quality materials, such as hardwood from trees like toddy palm, wild jackfruit, or breadfruit, and carve them into hollow, round shapes resembling a chicken's chest. The drumhead is typically made from buffalo hide, known for its durability and resilience. The meticulous craftsmanship ensures that the phon produces the best possible sound.

The drum competition takes place from late October to the full moon of the eleventh lunar month, coinciding with the Loi Krathong festival. The event is characterized by a lively atmosphere and the reverberating sounds of phon from various temples in the area. Competitors strive to create the finest phon to impress both the audience and judges.

The traditional drum competition not only showcases the musical skills of the people of Phatthalung but also fosters community unity. It plays a crucial role in preserving local culture and traditions, and it instills a sense of pride in the people of Phatthalung for continuing this unique cultural heritage.

Preserving the tradition of the drum competition in modern times is essential for maintaining the uniqueness of local culture and passing knowledge to future generations. This tradition affirms the love and pride that the people of Phatthalung have in their local heritage, making it a valuable cultural practice that deserves to be preserved and celebrated.
